Day 3 - Strawberry Fields Forever

DAY 3 of the Asmi Cali Coastal Tour
Santa Cruz to Monterey Bay (47 miles)

47 miles today from Santa Cruz to Monterey.  this area is very bike-friendly so we had a nice bike lane as we headed out of SC through Soquel & Aptos. Thanks to maps from the American Cycling Association, the guide book "Bicycling the Pacific Coast",  & signs for the Pacific Coast bike route, we ended up on rural roads that took us through miles of farmland: artichokes, different kinds of lettuce, swiss chard & acres & acres of strawberries!

we rode past workers bent over picking crops in the hot sun & truckloads of produce heading for markets.  if you're ever tempted to eat produce without washing it, DON'T!  the plants in the fields, organic or not, are so dirty!

we had a short stretch on the highway, then rode through Moss Landing which has a good-sized marina.  This fishing boat made me think we were on the East Coast.

About 10 miles from Monterey, we found the Monterey Bay Coastal Bike Path which led us through sand dunes & small towns, right into Cannery Row.  our hotel is very nice, right on the water,  but when the lady at the front desk saw us wheel into their fancy lobby, she gave us a room overlooking the street.  that's okay, though - it reminds me of Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

gotta go!  time for happy hour!
